NEW APP OPENS UP WORLD OF RISK TO STUDENTS

10/10/2016

A new app has been launched today to help students[i] think about the world of risk in a fun and interactive way.

The free ‘Discover Risk’ app - has been developed by the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII) with global insurance broker, Marsh, and specialty and commercial (re)insurer, Liberty Specialist Markets to help students understand the risks associated with day-to-day activities such as crossing a road or to going to a music festival and the importance of better planning.

Caspar Bartington, Education Relationship Manager at the CII, explains: “Learning how to manage risk is an important life skill. We wanted to present the world of insurance in a fun and interactive way – something young people could relate to. Using real life scenarios, our purpose-built app, teaches young people how to measure, plan and identify risk. It illustrates how unexpected events can have a huge impact on life and why they need to be considered and planned for.”

The app also highlights how modern day insurers consider all types of risks such as protecting a pop concert or an Olympic athlete against unexpected events, to help bring insurance to life in a tangible way. It teaches them how risk can be measured, whether to take a risk or not – as well as how to mitigate risk. It touches on the wide variety of roles available within the profession to encourage students to consider insurance as a career path.

Sam Ridgewell, Learning and Development Manager, at Liberty Specialty Markets, said: “Learning through gamification is very effective, particularly with today’s students who are often more comfortable using smartphones and tablets, than previous generations. We have seen how successful the board game has been and are proud to have been part of the app’s creation, which will help open the game up to more students.”

James Hubbard, Talent Acquisition Team Leader at Marsh, said: “The insurance sector needs bright, innovative people to meet the needs of a continually evolving market. We share a collective responsibility to raise its profile as a career path and early engagement with the student population in innovative ways like this will increase the likelihood of attracting the very best talent. This app will help open up the world of insurance to a wider range of students and encourage them to consider it as a profession. We are delighted to have been part of its development.”

The Discover Risk app is now available to download free of charge on the App Store and Google Play. For more information about Discover Risk visit www.DiscoverRisk.co.uk
