60 Second Interview with Sam Smith

What is finnCap?

finnCap is a lead broker and adviser to ambitious growth companies - the largest on Aim and 2nd largest adviser on the LSE/AIM.

What excites you most about your job?

I love knowing we’ve done a great job for our clients and helped them to grow. It’s great being part of their journey.

Which event in your career- good or bad - taught you the most?

Our MBO in August, 2007.

What was your first job?

It was a weekend job, cooking breakfast for the staff at my local Tesco.

Which previous job would you say is most responsible for where you are now?

I was an accountant at KPMG – it was great training but it brought me to realise that I was not well suited to large company culture.

If you weren’t the CEO of finnCap what would you be doing?

My alternative career choice was to be a primary school teacher – and I would have liked to work at a cookery school.

What would be your specialist subject on Mastermind?

I’m far too much of a generalist for mastermind

What is your greatest achievement, or proudest moment?

Becoming the largest broker on Aim was a big deal for finnCap and me personally, doing the MBO and winning Business Women of the Future. On the more personal front one of my proudest moments has been watching and helping my stepson, Theo, overcome shyness, grow in confidence and do amazing things.

What was the best bit of career advice you have been given?

Have faith in your own judgement and try not to take things too personally. Be yourself.

What would your super power be?

Super-speedy multi-tasking.

What are the creature comforts you take with you on business trips?

I try and pack only hand luggage wherever I go, so usually none.

Who would play you in a movie of your life?

I have absolutely no idea!

What is your most valued possession?

My little Aoife.

And finally…What keeps you awake at night?

Everything finnCap! And public speaking events.
